Mara, from Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis Mcgraw, which I read this weekend because I think it would be fun to do some book cover illustrations of some of my childhood favorites. Mara was written in the the 50’s, but is still in print today. I bought it in sixth grade, I think, and have re-read it an embarrassing number of times (though not as many times as someone else I know). Teenage runaway slave in ancient Egypt becomes a spy in the royal court and finds romance along the way… what 12-year-old girl doesn’t love that? (or 25 year old, for that matter…) Anyways, this was was a character sketch for eventual illustration. She looks too old, and it’s probably not the style I’m going to go with, but I still liked it, so there you go.  Funny how this tumblr has become more a visual list of all the books I’m reading rather than the sketchbook pages it was supposed to be… hmmm…
